So, Tuesday (8/7) did not go as well as I had hoped or planned. In fact, Dad was not agreeable to stay in assisted living. His confusion played a huge role. I know without a doubt that in his healthy state of mind, he would've enjoyed assisted living. The hard decision was made that first night to move him to memory care, which is a safer situation for him. He still has his own room and receives medicine and meals regularly. There are daily activities, such as movies, music, and games.
I've been to see him daily and he has called me throughout the day as well. Dad experienced some increased confusion initially, which is common. Dad's doctor had explained that to me months ago. Although I knew it was a possibility, it was still hard to watch. Dad seems to have settled a bit since the first days. He recognizes me again, which has been a sweet blessing. He recognizes his desk and dresser too. It's been nice to see him explore familiar things and get back to making notes as he has done often. I have pictures of family and friends in his room and will add more as I continue to decorate and add touches of home.
He got a new chair today, perfect for watching tv. He has a
side table stocked with a note pad and pens too.
As I left him for the evening, he was enjoying an ice cream
drumstick - his favorite. I keep those stocked for his nightly snack.
Looking Back
On Tuesday, before the scheduled introduction to assisted living, Dad had an adventurous day with me and my kids. He went with us to buy their school supplies!!! Stella was such a gem at keeping Paw Paw with our group. She took him by the hand and lead him around. Dad walked away a few times in search of the kids, as he had a hard time keeping up with all three. On a good day, I struggle with that too!
We had lunch at McDonald's, which had become a frequent spot for him and Mom. I don't know if he'll ever tire of the fish sandwich. This is him waiting patiently for a refill of coffee. In my mothering gene, I fight the urge to do things for him. He's very much capable of getting a refill, so I let him go. It's the same when I see him tying his shoe. I hold off the response to just do it for him. He's still quite independent and I want to encourage that!
He and Tipper spent some quiet time in our backyard at the beginning of the week. He loves that dog! Anyone who knows him knows that he and Tipper are buddies. Overall, she has adjusted well to life at our house. She has 3 kids and 2 dogs to keep her distracted and entertained. As Dad settles in his new room, I plan to take Tipper to visit. It will be good for both of them!
